A faithful, dark adaption of Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s play of the same name about an elderly billionaire woman who visits her run-down and broken hometown after decades away. The perjury committed forced her to leave the town for good. To the townsfolk’s amazement, the man, whose death she is looking for, is their honorary citizen Alfred III. After a collapse of a TV-company, Alice, Ada and Jana pull themselves together and establish their own company. They start rent out costumes and provide make-up services. Dressing up people who seek a new identity for one night, is a job that requires wizard-like imagination – coming up with crazy ideas, but acting with good taste and subtlety. Despite the competition and disagreements they manage to run their business successfully until the day when the love affair of the youngest woman takes a fatal turn. Company will be closed, and they find themselves back where they started. By portraying these three women and their clients, the film provides an intriguing picture of urban people, looking for their identity in a country in big changes – their worries and their striving towards something new, something prospering, something beautiful.

The movie is still the best achievement of the Estonian cinema. Based on a novel.

The first World War has just started and the small-time politician Aleksander Keskula, who´s never been too happy that his homeland Estonia is nothing more than a province of the Great Russian Empire, has developed a plan: use the exiled communist leader Lenin to push Russia into a revolution, which would result in the destruction of the czarist Empire and, just as a side dish, the province of Estonian would double it´s size by grabbing a big part of the Russian territory and declare itself Great Estonia. With germans providing the money the plan is set into motion. The real fun begins when Aleksander decides to cover his back against unseen events (like Lenin getting assassinated or deciding that he has better things to do than leading a revolution) and recruits 5 lookalikes to be Lenin´s doubles… who all eventually travel to Russia to start a revolution.
