This high-camp, independent fantasy adventure mixes elements of comic books, Westerns, post-apocalyptic science fiction (particularly “The Road Warrior” (1981)), chop-sockey action films, Elvis Presley musicals, and road pictures into a postmodern stew. Jeffrey Falcon is Buddy, a samurai guitar player wandering through a dystopian, alternate-reality America. In 1957, the Russians dropped nuclear bombs on the country, which is now mostly a barren wasteland of sand dunes, save for “Lost Vegas,” which has become the new U.S. capitol and the residence of Elvis, who is now quite literally the King. News arrives that Elvis has died, and Buddy sets out for the City of Sin to take the ruler’s place, accompanied by a mute kid (Justin McGuire). Along the way, the pair will face numerous villains, including Death (Stephane Gauger) and his trio of archers, as well as cannibals, mutants and three lethal bowlers.

Tenshi no tamago / Angel’s Egg (1985)

The plot for “Tenshi no Tamago” is not something that can easily be related in words. The film is largely about the presentation more than action, and understatement instead of open revelation. Existentialism abounds, heightened by the moody artwork and the dialogue, which asks more questions than it answers. Bear in mind, however, that the conflict in the plotline primarily occurs in the audience’s mind, not in any sequence of actions in the film, spurred by speculation arising from one jarring impression after another. There are only two primary characters in “Tenshi no Tamago”: a young girl who bears an egg and a man who holds a strange cross. The audience is left to speculate as to the identities and true personalities of these two images which act in this disturbing world. Indeed, much of their dialogue involves the question “dare ka” (who are you). For such an existential film, however, this is perfect, as any open declaration of their thoughts, instead of such questions and mysterious actions, would ruin the mystery of the film.

George A. Romero, who revolutionized the American horror film in 1968 with the instant classic “Night of the Living Dead”, returns to his dystopian zombie cycle with this horror thriller. In “Land of the Dead”, the zombies whose numbers had been slowly but steadily growing through “Dawn of the Dead” and “Day of the Dead” now dominate the streets of most American cities, while urban skyscrapers have been taken over by surviving humans, usually greed-addled opportunists who allow the living to stay in their fortified compounds for a price. Guarding the buildings are rough-and-tumble mercenaries who have learned to do battle with the zombies, making use of powerful weapons to gain advantage. But as the zombie civilization grows, the creatures have begun to slowly evolve, with their dormant thought processes beginning to awaken, and as unrest begins to ferment among the mercenaries and the entrepreneurs who pay them, the ghouls may have found a way to defeat the last stronghold of humanity. Land of the Dead stars Dennis Hopper as arch capitalist Kaufman, and Simon Baker, John Leguizamo, Robert Joy, and Asia Argento as some of the mercenaries; Asia Argento’s father, Dario Argento, served as a producer on one of the earlier films in the series, “Dawn of the Dead”.

Hell Comes to Frogtown (1988)

The great nuclear holocaust has come and gone, and humanity is hanging on a string. Women rule what’s left, and the world is filled with giant mutant humanoid frogs who have started their own communities. Fertile human males have become one of the rarest things on Earth. This really low-budget sci-fi adventure chronicles the exploits of one of those men, the wandering loner Sam Hell (as played by former wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper). The tale begins as Hell is caught and tried for raping a woman. Realizing that he is fertile, Medtech, the organization devoted to repopulating the world, takes him and forces him to wear high-tech underwear designed to control his lusty tendencies and to keep him from squandering his seed on infertile ladies. The organization then forces him to go deep into froggy territory to bring back the fertile women stolen by the amphibian’s leader.

Music video director Richard Stanley made his feature debut with this apocalyptic, post-industrial nightmare set in the distant future. Dylan McDermott stars as Moses “Hard Mo”‘ Baxter, a washed-up ex-soldier who spends most of his time in “The Zone” — a scorched, ochre-colored desert littered with the radioactive debris of an unspecified war (or wars). Mo’s recent Zone foray with war-buddy Shades (Jon Lynch) turns up an interesting find — a pile of droid parts he purchases from a spooky “Zone Tripper” (Carl McCoy, frontman for goth-rock’s Fields of the Nephilim), which he carts home to his reclusive artist girlfriend Jill (Stacy Travis) to serve as raw material for her latest work. Unbeknownst to them, the dismantled robot is the prototype of a controversial new battle-droid dubbed the Mark 13, which is designed to reassemble itself from available materials if damaged in combat. In short order, the Mark 13 proceeds to do just that, tapping into the power grid in Jill’s fortress-like apartment and targeting her for death.

In the post-apocalyptic future where television sets are more important than food, TV ratings are the all important currency of the nation. A new technique of preventing viewers from channel surfing proves somewhat detrimental to particularly sedentary couch potatoes. The top studio becomes concerned: dead viewers make for low ratings. Edison Carter, top news reporter, is sent to find out more. After a motorcycle accident, his mind is preserved by wizz-kid Bryce and becomes his wise cracking, computer generated alter-ego: Max Headroom, who manages to boost ratings above those of any live hosts to date. This made for TV movie was later remade (sanitized version) as the first episode of the series.

Medieval fantasy meets futuristic science fiction in this effects-heavy action epic from former “X-Files” director Rob Bowman. In present-day London, 12-year-old Quinn Abercrom witnesses the awakening of a hibernating dragon from a centuries-long slumber, the result of a construction dig supervised by his mother and an incident for which Quinn feels partially responsible. Twenty years later, the adult Quinn (Christian Bale) is the fire chief of a refortified castle community, responsible for dousing the blazes lit by the dragon’s prodigious number of flame-spewing offspring, airborne juggernauts that have wreaked havoc across the globe, torching civilization and turning humans into an endangered species. Hope arrives in the form of Denton “Dragon Slayer” Van Zan (Matthew McConaughey), an American known to be the only man to ever kill one of the dragons, and Alex (Izabella Scorupco), a scientist/pilot who’s a member of Van Zan’s army, a zealous fighting force that includes a secret weapon: the Archangels, paratroopers using themselves as bait to attract and then dispatch the deadly beasts. “Reign of Fire” (2002) co-stars Gerard Butler, Alice Krige, and Alexander Siddig.

About 15 years after the events of “Mad Max 2”, nuclear war has finally destroyed what little was left of civilization. Grizzled and older, former cop Max (Mel Gibson) roams the Australian desert in a camel-drawn vehicle — until father-and-son thieves Jebediah Sr. (Bruce Spence) and Jr. (Adam Cockburn) use their jury-rigged airplane to steal his possessions and means of transportation. Max soon winds up in Bartertown, a cesspool of post-apocalyptic capitalism powered by methane-rich pig manure and overseen by two competing overlords, Aunty Entity (Tina Turner) and Master (Angelo Rossitto), a crafty midget who rides around on the back of his hulking underling, Blaster (Paul Larsson). Seeking to re-equip himself, Max strikes a deal with the haughty Aunty to kill Blaster in ritualized combat inside Thunderdome, a giant jungle gym where Bartertown’s conflicts are played out in a postmodern update of blood and circuses. Although Max manages to fell the mighty Blaster, he refuses to kill him after realizing the brute is actually a retarded boy. Aunty’s henchmen murder Blaster nonetheless, then punish Max for violating the law that “Two men enter, one man leaves.” Lashed to the back of a hapless pack animal and sent out into a sandstorm, a near-death Max is rescued by a band of tribal children and teens. The descendants of the victims of an airplane crash, the kids inhabit a lush valley and wait for the day when Captain Walker, the plane’s pilot, will return to lead them back to civilization. Some of the children, refusing to believe that Max isn’t Walker and that the glorious cities of their mythology no longer exist, set off in search of civilization on their own. Max and three tribe members must then rescue their friends from Bordertown and the clutches of Aunty Entity — a quest that ends in a lengthy desert chase sequence that echoes the first two “Mad Max” films. Spence also appeared in “Mad Max 2” in a different role, that of the Gyro Captain.

Director George Miller’s follow-up to his own 1979 hit “Mad Max” is proof that not all sequels are inferior to their originals. If anything, this brutal sci-fi action film is even more intense and exciting than its predecessor, although the state of its post-apocalyptic world has only become worse. Several years after the deaths of his wife and child, Max (Mel Gibson) has become an alienated nomad, wandering an Australian outback that has fallen into tribal warfare conducted from scattered armed camps. After a road battle with psychotic villain Wez (Vernon Wells), Max meets up with the odd Gyro Captain (Bruce Spence), who takes him to the camp of a sympathetic group led by Pappagallo (Mike Preston). As Pappagallo’s people are camped at a refinery, Max plans to take their oil — more precious than gold in this world — but eventually joins them to fight a band of marauders led by the evil Humungus (Kjell Nilsson). The stunning climax features a heart-pounding chase scene involving an oil tanker-truck and a frenzied rush for the coast, with Humungus and his forces in hot pursuit. Nilsson is a scary villain, with huge muscles and a sinister pre-Jason hockey mask, but the stunt work is the key here, and it is more flamboyantly dynamic than ever, edited at breakneck pace and staged with manic fury by Miller and stunt coordinator Max Aspin. Savage and kinetic, “Mad Max 2” is a must-see for action buffs.
