Ohtlikud mängud / Dangerous Games (1974)

A mad doctor attempts to conquer death by conducting a series of immoral experiments, but instead creates a flesh-eating army of the undead. As the dreadful Dr. Frosta (Ramiro Oliveros) works feverishly to resurrect the dead, his neglected girlfriend Simone (Marcia Bichette) begins to resent him for favoring his work over their relationship. Meanwhile, a local police detective (Fernando Sancho) begins to suspect that the doctor is up to no good, and starts gathering the evidence needed to put him away for life. Little do they all realize that the swamp where Dr. Frosta discards his corpses has become an oasis of the living dead, and the vengeful zombies aren’t happy about having their eternal slumber disturbed.

“Zupa” (Soup) utilizes an optical printer to overlay bold colors on surrealistic imagery. Its look and structure are somewhat uncharacteristic of Zbig, but his thematic hand shows in a number of repeated gestures: a man reaching over in bed to touch his wife’s breast, a hand lighting a cigarette, a woman pulling up and unrolling her stocking. Everything is culled from live-action sources, but “Zupa”’s collage style and bold, dark colors make it clearly read as an animated film.

The directorial debut of horrormeister John Carpenter comes in the way of “Dark Star”, a parody of Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece “2001 – A Space Odyssey”. The story follows four hippyish techno-nerds in their mission through deep space to destroy planets and ward off boredom and loneliness as they attempt to hold on to what little they can remember of Earth. When their weapons system malfunctions, they are forced to deal with a “smart” bomb trapped in the launching mechanism, and the acting captain must debate phenomenology with the device in order to dissuade it from destroying them all. The film also features an imaginative and amusing struggle between one crew member and an inflatable alien he attempts to keep as a pet, a long reflection on the virtues of surfing, a series of personality struggles, and a cryogenically-frozen captain whose brain is preserved on computer for the purpose of consultation.
