One of the most popular Disney animated musicals, “The Lion King” presents the story of a lion cub’s journey to adulthood and acceptance of his royal destiny. Simba (voiced first by Jonathan Taylor Thomas, then by Matthew Broderick) begins life as an honored prince, the son of the powerful King Mufasa (voiced by James Earl Jones). The cub’s happy childhood turns tragic when his evil uncle, Scar (voiced by Jeremy Irons), murders Mufasa and drives Simba away from the kingdom. In exile, the young lion befriends the comically bumbling pair of Pumbaa the warthog (voiced by Ernie Sabella) and Timon the meerkat (voiced by Nathan Lane), he and lives a carefree jungle life. As he approaches adulthood, however, he is visited by the spirit of his father, who instructs him to defeat the nefarious Scar and reclaim his rightful throne. Borrowing elements from Hamlet, classical mythology, and African folk tales, The Lion King tells its mythic coming-of-age tale with a combination of spectacular visuals and lively music, featuring light, rhythmic songs by Elton John and Tim Rice, and a score by Hans Zimmer. Embraced by children and adults alike, the film also spawned hit songs (“Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” “The Circle of Life”) and a hit Broadway musical.

The setting for this grim drama is a home for children of alcoholics, criminals, or emotionally impaired parents who do not want their children and cannot take care of them anyway. Mixed in with the traumatized teens at this institution are also orphans who almost seem to have it better. Mari (Monika Jarv) comes to the home after her drunken father throws her out of the house. She escapes immediately but then is forced back into the institution when she has a run-in with a group of street toughs. The kids in the institution give her a hard time and just when she is trying to survive their harassment, she discovers that Robi (Hendrik Toompers), one of the teens who attacked her, is also a resident, and admired by the others because he antagonizes the teachers. Just as Mari’s difficulties reach a climax, Robi steps in to help he,r and from that moment onward, a friendship begins, albeit one with a very uncertain future.

The story begins as Dobermann and company boldly pull off a blood-soaked bank robbery in broad daylight. Their confidence comes from the decoys out distracting the police. After the heist, the gang members hightail it to their lair, located in a remote rural junkyard. When news of their crime reaches police officer Christini, he vows to capture them. Dobermann could not find himself a more ruthless adversary for Christini is evil incarnate and devoid of conscience and decency. When Christini and Dobermann finally meet a terrifying and graphically violent confrontation ensues.

Horror-meister George Romero directs this thriller about a 99-pound weakling who strikes back at everyone who has wronged him in the past. Henry Creedlow (Jason Flemyng) works at a fashion mag called Bruiser for the short-fused, dictatorial Miles Styles (Peter Stormare). Henry spends much of his day fantasizing about killing himself and killing others, particularly his nagging wife Janine (Nina Garbiras). After learning that Miles is shagging his wife and that his stockbroker best friend swindled him out of a stack of money, Henry wakes up the following day to learn that his face has mysteriously been rendered white and featureless. Soon, like a mime with bloodlust, Henry violently dispatches with everyone in his life, save Miles’ wife, whose paintings may be responsible for his sudden transformation. This film was screened at the 2000 Berlin Film Festival.

A man in search of his missing sister stumbles across a deadly secret in the woods surrounding Crystal Lake as “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” redux duo Michael Bay and Marcus Nispel resurrect one of the silver screen’s most feared slashers — machete-wielding, hockey mask-wearing madman Jason Voorhees. The last time Clay heard from his sister, she was headed toward Crystal Lake. There, amidst the creaky old cabins and moss-coated trees, an unstoppable force of evil lies quietly dormant, patiently waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Though the police and locals all warn Clay to stay as far away from Crystal Lake as possible, it’s the only lead he has, and he isn’t willing to give up until he finds his sister. Clay isn’t the only one inhabiting these woods either, because a group of thrill-seeking college students have just arrived at Crystal Lake hoping for a wild weekend of fun in the sun. Later, as Clay and one of the recently arrived revelers search for clues, the infamous Jason Voorhees emerges to show them just why the locals have avoided these woods for years. Could it be that Clay’s sister has already met a grim demise at the end of Jason’s razor-sharp machete, or is she still out there somewhere in the woods, waiting for her brother to come to her rescue? “Freddy vs. Jason” scribes Damian Shannon and Mark Swift pen the screenplay for a remake executive produced by Sean S. Cunningham (producer/director of the original “Friday the 13th”).
